How to: Video Merger

  1. Add the clips and drag them into order.
  2. Pick the output size, frame rate and fit (bars or crop).
  3. Merge and download the finished video.

Phones record many short clips, and sharing them one by one is tedious. FreePDF’s video merger joins them into a single video in the order you choose, resizing everything to one consistent size and frame rate, with sound included. It uses your browser’s built-in video encoder (WebCodecs), so your footage never leaves your device and there is no watermark. Vertical, square and landscape clips can be fitted with bars or cropped to fill the frame.

Tips for best results

How merging works in the browser

Each clip is decoded frame by frame, drawn onto a canvas at the output size and handed to the browser’s hardware-accelerated video encoder. Audio is decoded, resampled and encoded alongside. Because the clips are re-encoded, they do not need to share a resolution, frame rate or codec, which is the usual cause of failures in simpler “append” tools. The result is a standard MP4 (H.264/AAC) or WebM file.

Handling different shapes

When a vertical phone clip meets a landscape clip, something has to give. “Fit inside” shows the whole frame with black bars – nothing is lost, but the screen is not filled. “Fill and crop” enlarges the clip to cover the frame and trims the overflow – it looks more polished but may cut off people at the edges. Choose the output shape based on where the video will be watched, then pick the fit that suits most clips.

Limits and alternatives

Because everything happens on your own device, speed depends on your processor; a one-minute 1080p video typically takes about as long to merge as it does to play, or less on a modern computer. For long films, transitions, titles or multi-track editing, a desktop editor such as DaVinci Resolve or Shotcut is a better choice. For quick joins of short clips, the merger saves you an upload and an install.

Frequently asked questions

How long can the clips be?

The merger works best for short videos – a few minutes in total – because every frame is re-encoded on your device. Longer projects are possible on a fast computer but take time.

Which browsers are supported?

Recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox versions with WebCodecs support. If your browser lacks it, the tool tells you.

Is there a watermark?

No.

Can I merge clips of different resolutions?

Yes – every clip is scaled to the output size you choose.

Does it keep the sound?

Yes. Audio from every clip is included; clips without sound get silence.

Is Video Merger really free?

Yes. Every tool on FreePDF is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. FreePDF processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. FreePDF works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
