How to: Keyword Density Checker
- Paste your article, page copy or full HTML.
- Pick single words or phrases and optionally enter a target keyword.
- Review the table and download it as CSV.
Keyword density is the share of a text made up by a given word or phrase. It will not rank a page on its own, but it is a quick way to see what your copy is really about, spot accidental repetition and confirm that your main topic and its related phrases actually appear. FreePDF’s checker counts single words and two- or three-word phrases, filters common stop words, checks a target keyword and flags terms that look over-used – all locally, so drafts stay private.
Common uses
- Check a blog post before publishing to see if the topic is clear.
- Find repetitive words that make writing feel clunky.
- Compare your page’s vocabulary with a competitor’s by pasting both.
- Verify that a target keyword appears in the copy without stuffing.
- Review product descriptions or ad copy for balance.
Tips for best results
- Use 2- and 3-word phrases to see real search terms, not just single words.
- Keep stop words filtered to focus on meaningful vocabulary.
- Raise the minimum count to hide words that appear only once.
- Use synonyms and related terms rather than repeating one phrase.
- Read your text aloud – if a phrase sounds repetitive, readers will notice.
How density is calculated
Density is the number of times a term appears divided by the total number of words, multiplied by 100. For phrases, the tool counts every overlapping run of two or three words that does not cross a sentence break. With stop words filtered, words such as “the”, “and” or “is” are hidden from the table, though they still count towards the total so percentages stay honest. Numbers and words in any language with spaces between words are counted.
Keyword density and modern SEO
Search engines stopped relying on simple repetition long ago. They understand synonyms, context and intent, and repeated keywords can even look spammy. Today density is best used as a diagnostic: a page about cold brew coffee should clearly mention cold brew, coffee, steeping, grounds and so on. If your main term is missing, or a single phrase dominates unnaturally, the checker makes it obvious in seconds.
Improving your copy with the results
Look at the top ten terms: do they describe the page’s purpose? If not, add sections that cover the subject more fully. If one term is far ahead of the rest, swap some instances for pronouns or related words. Check that the target keyword appears in the title, the first paragraph and at least one subheading. Then paste the revised version and compare – the CSV export makes before-and-after tracking easy.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good keyword density?
There is no magic number. Write naturally; if one term goes well above about 2–3% of all words, the text probably reads as repetitive.
Can I paste HTML?
Yes. Tags, scripts and styles are stripped, so only the visible text is counted.
Is there a word limit?
No fixed limit; very long texts of 100,000+ words still run in a second or two.
Does it work for other languages?
Yes for languages that separate words with spaces. The stop-word list is English.
Can it fetch a URL?
No – browsers cannot read other sites directly. Open the page, copy its text or view-source HTML and paste it in.
Is Keyword Density Checker really free?
Yes. Every tool on FreePDF is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. FreePDF processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.
