How to: Typing Speed Test
- Choose a test length and the text type.
- Start typing – the timer begins with your first key.
- See your WPM, accuracy and errors, then try to beat your best score.
Typing speed matters for students, job seekers, programmers and anyone who spends the day writing. FreePDF’s typing test measures your words per minute and accuracy on real sentences, common word drills or text you paste yourself, highlighting mistakes as you go. Choose a 15-second sprint or a 2-minute endurance test, and your best score is saved in your browser so you can track your improvement. There is no account and nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
- Check your speed before a job application that lists a WPM requirement.
- Practise daily to build touch-typing speed and accuracy.
- Warm up before a writing or coding session.
- Run friendly typing races with classmates or colleagues.
- Measure progress when learning a new keyboard layout.
Tips for best results
- Accuracy first – speed follows once errors drop.
- Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and avoid looking down.
- Use 60-second tests for a reliable score; 15 seconds is more variable.
- Paste text from your own field to practise specialist vocabulary.
- Take short daily sessions – ten minutes beats an hour once a week.
How the score is calculated
Typing tests use a standard “word” of five characters, including spaces and punctuation, so long and short words count fairly. Your net WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed. Accuracy is the percentage of keystrokes that matched the text. Errors are shown in red as you type, and you can correct them – corrected characters count towards accuracy but not against your final speed.
Improving your speed
Touch typing – using all ten fingers without looking at the keys – is the single biggest improvement for most people. Begin slowly, focusing on correct finger placement from the home row, and accept a temporary drop in speed. After a few weeks of short daily practice, most learners overtake their old “hunt and peck” speed. Rhythm matters more than bursts: steady, even keystrokes reduce errors.
Choosing a test mode
Passages contain punctuation, capital letters and numbers, so they reflect real writing. Common-word drills use only frequent lower-case words, which is useful for building raw speed and finger memory. Custom text lets you practise exactly what you type at work – code, medical terms, another language. Compare scores only within the same mode, because punctuation-heavy text is naturally slower.
