How to: Photo Filters
- Upload a photo.
- Pick a filter and adjust its strength and the sliders.
- Download the edited photo in full resolution.
A good filter can rescue a dull phone photo or give a set of pictures a consistent look. Choose from presets such as vintage, noir, sepia, warm, cool, matte, lomo and dramatic, set how strong the effect should be, and refine the result with sliders for brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth, hue and vignette. The live preview updates as you move each slider.
Common uses
- Give holiday or event photos a consistent style before sharing.
- Convert portraits to black and white or sepia for a classic look.
- Warm up cold indoor photos or cool down overly yellow lighting.
- Create moody images for posters, album covers and blog headers.
Tips for best results
- Start with a preset at 60–80% strength for natural-looking results.
- Add a light vignette to draw the eye to the centre.
- Use warmth to correct white balance before applying a creative filter.
- Save as PNG if you plan to edit the photo again later.
How the filters work
Each filter is a mix of simple adjustments applied to every pixel: brightness shifts all values up or down, contrast stretches them away from the middle grey, saturation moves colours towards or away from grey, and warmth adds red while removing blue. Sepia uses the classic colour matrix from film photography, and vignette darkens pixels gradually towards the corners. Because the maths runs directly on the pixels, results look identical in every modern browser.
Black and white done well
For black and white the tool uses perceptual weights for red, green and blue, so skies and skin tones convert with natural brightness. Noir adds stronger contrast and a vignette for a cinematic look. If a monochrome image looks flat, raise the contrast slider a little.
