A giant puzzle grid is one of the most eye-catching ways to launch a product, announce an event or refresh an Instagram profile. FreePDF’s Instagram grid maker splits a single photo into 3, 6, 9 or 12 perfectly aligned posts, using portrait tiles that suit the current profile layout, and numbers them so you know exactly which to post first. The photo is processed on your device, and the tiles download as one ZIP.

Tips for best results

Planning a grid launch

Decide what the full image should communicate, then check how each tile looks alone, because followers will see individual posts in their feed. Single tiles with an interesting fragment – a texture, part of a face or a word – encourage people to visit your profile to see the whole. Schedule the posts in quick succession, starting with tile 1, and check your profile after each upload.

Current profile layout

Instagram’s profile grid changed from square thumbnails to taller 3:4 previews. Posting 4:5 portrait images (1080 × 1350 pixels) gives the closest fit; the profile trims a thin strip from the top and bottom of each tile. The maker’s default 4:5 tiles account for this, so the overall image stays continuous. If your brand still prefers squares, switch the tile shape – the grid will join, but with small gaps.

Rows of three

The grid always has three columns, so every row you add takes three posts. A 3×1 strip is a quick banner; 3×2 and 3×3 are the most popular; 3×4 is great for tall posters. Remember that each new post you publish later shifts the grid by one position, which breaks the picture unless you post in multiples of three. Many creators post three at a time to keep their grid aligned.

Frequently asked questions

Why 4:5 tiles?

Instagram profiles now show posts in a 3:4 portrait crop. Posting 4:5 tiles fills that space with the least cropping; square tiles leave gaps at the top and bottom.

In what order do I post?

Post them in file-number order, starting with tile 1. New posts appear at the top-left, so tile 1 is the bottom-right piece and the last file is the top-left piece – the grid assembles itself as you publish.

What size are the tiles?

1080 × 1350 pixels for 4:5 tiles or 1080 × 1080 for square, exported as high-quality JPG by default.

Can I make a carousel instead?

Yes – choose 3 × 1 for a seamless swipeable panorama.

Do I need an app?

No. It works in any browser, on phone or desktop.

Is Instagram Grid Maker really free?

Yes. Every tool on FreePDF is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. FreePDF processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. FreePDF works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
