How to: Random Name Picker

  1. Paste names, one per line (or switch to “Numbers” and set a range).
  2. Choose how many to pick and whether repeats are allowed.
  3. Press pick – copy or download the result with a timestamp.

Drawing a winner from a hat is fun until there are 500 entries or someone asks whether it was fair. FreePDF’s random name picker draws one or many winners from any list, can remove duplicates, and can also act as a random number generator. It uses the same cryptographically secure randomness that browsers use for encryption, so no entry is favoured, and the result is saved with a timestamp you can share. Nothing is uploaded – your list stays on your device.

Tips for best results

Why crypto randomness matters

Many simple pickers use Math.random, which is fast but not designed to be unpredictable, and naive code such as “random × length” can slightly favour some positions. This picker draws from crypto.getRandomValues and discards values that would create bias, so every entry has precisely equal odds. For a family game the difference is academic; for a public giveaway with prizes it lets you state honestly that the draw was uniformly random.

Running a fair giveaway

Publish the rules in advance: the closing time, who can enter, how many entries are allowed and how winners will be drawn. Collect entries into a list, remove disallowed or duplicate ones, then draw while recording your screen or live-streaming. Download the result, which includes the time of the draw and the number of entries, and keep it with your records. Many platforms and local laws have specific rules for promotions, so check those before you start.

Random numbers on demand

Switch to “Numbers” mode to generate integers in any range – one dice roll (1–6), six lottery numbers from 1–49 without repeats, or a random sample of row numbers from a spreadsheet. Results can be sorted for readability. Because each number is drawn independently with secure randomness, sequences are unpredictable, though this tool is not a certified generator for regulated gambling or lotteries.

Frequently asked questions

Is the draw really random?

Yes. It uses crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographically secure generator, with rejection sampling so every entry has exactly the same chance.

How many names can I enter?

Thousands. Lists are processed locally, so even a 10,000-entry giveaway draws instantly.

Can I pick several winners at once?

Yes – set “How many” and tick “Unique” to avoid repeats.

Can the same name win twice?

Only if “Unique” is unticked. If a name appears twice in the list, it has two chances unless you remove duplicates.

Can I prove the result later?

The downloaded result includes the date, time and number of entries. For public draws, recording the screen is the best evidence.

Is Random Name Picker really free?

Yes. Every tool on FreePDF is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. FreePDF processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. FreePDF works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
