How to: Percentage Calculator
- Choose the type of calculation.
- Enter the two numbers.
- Read the answer and the related results below.
Percentages appear everywhere – discounts, tips, exam marks, interest rates, inflation, election results and business reports. This calculator answers the eight most common percentage questions and, for the numbers you enter, shows the results of all the other questions too, so you can quickly sanity-check your thinking.
Common uses
- Work out tips, service charges and sales tax.
- Calculate exam scores and grade percentages.
- Measure growth in revenue, followers, prices or population.
- Find the original price before a discount or tax was applied.
Tips for best results
- For “what is the original amount”, use “X is Y% of what?” rather than adding the percentage back.
- Use percentage points when comparing two percentages, such as interest rates.
- Percentage difference is symmetric and is used in science; percentage change depends on the starting value.
- Commas in large numbers are ignored, so 1,250 works.
Percent vs percentage points
If an interest rate rises from 4% to 5%, it has gone up by 1 percentage point – but by 25% in relative terms. News reports and financial statements mix these up surprisingly often. The calculator shows both, so you can quote figures correctly in reports, presentations and articles.
Mental shortcuts
10% of any number moves the decimal point one place left; 5% is half of that; 1% moves it two places. So 15% of 80 is 8 + 4 = 12. Also, X% of Y always equals Y% of X: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4. These tricks help you check that the calculator's answer is in the right ballpark.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percentage change
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase.
Why is a 50% drop not reversed by a 50% rise
Percentages apply to different bases. 100 falls 50% to 50, but 50 must rise 100% to get back to 100.
