Listening is often easier than reading – on a long article, while proofreading, when your eyes are tired, or when learning a language. FreePDF’s text to speech reader uses the Web Speech API built into modern browsers, so it plays instantly with the natural voices already on your device, in dozens of languages and accents. There is no character limit, no account and no cost, and with offline voices your text never leaves your computer.

How browser speech works

Modern browsers expose a speech synthesis engine to web pages. The page sends the text and the chosen voice, rate and pitch; the browser or operating system turns it into sound. Offline voices are generated entirely on your device. Some browsers, such as Chrome and Edge, also offer online voices that are synthesised by the browser vendor’s cloud service and are often more natural – the voice name usually indicates this, so choose an offline voice for maximum privacy.

Getting more natural voices

On Windows, Settings → Time & language → Speech lets you add voices for other languages. On macOS and iOS, Accessibility → Spoken Content → System Voice offers downloadable enhanced and premium voices that sound very lifelike. Android voices come from the Speech Services app in settings. After installing a voice, reload this page and it appears in the list. Microsoft Edge offers a wide range of high-quality online voices by default.

Accessibility and learning

Text to speech is a recognised accommodation for dyslexia and visual impairment, and many people simply understand material better when they hear and see it at once. Language learners can compare their own pronunciation with a native-accent voice and replay tricky sentences at slower speeds. Writers use it to catch missing words, repeated phrases and awkward rhythm that the eye skips over when re-reading silently.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download the speech as an MP3?

No. The browser’s speech engine plays audio directly and does not let web pages record it. To keep an audio copy, use your device’s screen or audio recorder while it plays.

Why are the voices different on each device?

The voices come from your operating system and browser. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS each include their own set, and some browsers add online voices.

Is there a text limit?

No fixed limit. Some online voices stop after several minutes, so split very long documents into sections or use an offline voice.

Which languages are available?

Whatever voices your device provides – typically English plus dozens of other languages on modern systems.

Does it work offline?

Yes with offline voices, once the page is loaded.

Is Text to Speech really free?

Yes. Every tool on FreePDF is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. FreePDF processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. FreePDF works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
